Algarve Animals - Guia
By Dawn (Wetnose Midlands)
Appeal to help Cats & Dogs in the Algarve, Portugal
Wetnose Animal Aid is currently raising funds and item donations to help the wonderful work of a English lady living in Guia, Algarve. Vickee Tayler has lived in Guia for some 15+ years and is a great animal lover and advocate; she single handed shelters and cares for some 22 dogs and 80+ cats on her land. Every hour Vickee works (running a small beauty salon onsite) raises income to support these animals. Vickee also visits many of the local strays every evening to feed and care for them.
Vickee operates a strict neuter/spay policy - primarily for all male animals and females if funds allow. Whilst the Dogs are rehomed on occasion, it is difficult to find and monitor loving homes for the cats; as a result many will spend the rest of their lives at the shelter.
I visit the shelter at least once a year and what a wonderful place! Vickee and her helpers works so hard to help the dogs and cats of the algarve. Not just in her home shelter but regular nightly visits to all the local shopping malls/supermarkets to feed the strays + a few gypsy horses in her area. Wetnose would like to help Vickee by
sending funds to cover the construction of 2 new pens for the Cats, to ease the immediate Cat/Kitten overcrowding. We are also continue to send a goodie parcel usually once a year and would welcome donations of the following:
- Dog Toys (esp. Large/Robust Kong Toys and Treat Balls to stimulate the dogs during the day. Flying saucer/Ball type toys are great for use twice a day when each dog is walked)
- Towels/knitted blankets (used in cardboard boxes - the cats favourite sleeping areas!)
- Plastic Dog Beds (Large & VLarge)
- Flea Collars
- Worming/Flea Treatments esp. 'Drop-on' variety
- Brushes
- Dog Collars & Retractable Leads
Whilst new or nearly new items are most
appreciated, we regret that second hand or well worn/used items cannot be accepted for hygiene/export reasons.
Over the last couple of years Vickee spent Wetnose donations (850Euros) on repairing existing cat and dog pens + building a new big cat enclosure. The cat climbing frames Wetnose purchased (as you can see in the video) have also been put to good use.
Thanks also to other generous donations of - knitted blankets (which the cats just love 'k
needing' in the winter!) cat beds, food, meds, toys and not to forget the doggie Christmas day parcels from Sue in Dorridge at Dixons Pet Shop. Sue made up 22 individually wrapped doggie presents of 2 square meals, a squeaky toy and a pudding ! What a Christmas day I hear the doggies had - apparently the countryside was 'squeaking' all day !
We are continuing to support Vickee during 2009. She receives no funds whatsoever from elsewhere and relies on her own income from her small health/beauty clinic onsite to look after the animals.
