Nanook and Alaska
Rotherham Dog Rescue

Nanook and Alaska were wondering around
the streets of Sheffield at midnight. One of our volunteers,
Jane, who fosters our puppies was stood outside a bar
in Sheffield when a beautiful German Shepherd came up
to her and licked her hand. She talked to him gently
and as she stroked him, he turned to look behind him.
Jane turned and there was his mate, a beautiful white
German Shepherd. Jane couldn't believe her eyes. She
talked to them both, they were in a very poor physical
state, covered in oil. Jane was very very distressed
because they ran away and she couldn't catch them. Jane
couldn't rest and after many telephone calls she eventually
traced them. They were picked up later that night on
a housing estate by the police. They were taken to kennels
in Barnsley and Jane rang them straight away. The kennels
only keep the dogs for 7 days, hopefully then they are
sent to Rescue Kennels, but sometimes, the worst happens.
Jane was desperate to save these dogs and visited them
many times during their seven days. An arrangement was
made to transfer them to Rotherham Dog Rescue as soon
as the 7 days were completed. They are now with us.
This week we will be advertising them in our local paper.
It would be so wonderful if they could be re-homed together,
because they love one another so much. Nanook, the boy,
is about 5 years old, and Alaska is approximately 2
years old.
This is just one case that we, here, at Rotherham Dog
Rescue are dealing with at the moment. We try very hard
to help the dogs in our area, but we just take the tip
off the iceberg. However we will continue to do what
we can and hopefully re-home the dogs in our care, who
are desperate for loving homes.

Marmaduke - Seaview Animal Shelter
www.seaviewanimalshelter.1to1.org

An update from Marmaduke - a large than
life furry rescue resident at Seaview!
In our last update, Marmaduke was just
recovering from his dental; thankfully the homeopathy
helped him to make a full recovery. I can't say that
it improved his temper any, but that is something that
we have grown used to!
A stressful time for Marmaduke, Tony and I, is when
Marmaduke is in need flea treatment. Just the thought
of treating Marmaduke for fleas, sends shivers down
my spine. Tony tends to retreat and leave me to it.
'There's no point in both of us getting mauled is there?'
Men are such cowards!
I have tried many approaches to delousing Marmaduke
but they all basically end the same way: me getting
savaged. For some reason he is always happy to be loved
and cuddled but he has a sixth sense for anything like
flea preparations. It doesn't matter what type you use,
whether it be powder, spray, adding it to your hands
to wipe through his coat, even something completely
odourless, Marmaduke just flips.
On the most recent occasion, Marmaduke threw what can
only be described as his best wobbly yet. He managed
to grip my hand with all four sets of claws and completely
savage it. There was blood dripping from my hand and
spattered on the walls. I had just decorated that room
so it didn't go down at all well.
I'll give Marmaduke credit where it is due; he is always
very loving after the event. I can never make my mind
up whether he is seeking forgiveness or forgiving me
for having sinned.
When the dust has settled Marmaduke always insists on
lots of 'bear hugs'. The moment that we sit down, he
runs over and takes a flying leap onto our chest and
wraps he warm furry legs tightly round our necks; his
head is rubbed up against our faces. He does his 'I
really love you Mum' act. I have to say that the feeling
is mutual despite his violent temper.
Some cats come into our lives and slip out of them,
leaving barely a trace, while others are etched permanently
on our memory. Marmaduke is one of the latter. God forbid
that anything shall happen to Marmaduke in the near
future, but when, like all our loved ones, his time
comes to pass over, he shall leave a gaping hole in
our lives; a hole that no other animal will ever fill.
Dear Dawn
Many thanks for the box of cat goodies; it will keep
them going over Christmas!
Hope all is well with you and your pussy cats. Marmaduke
is doing really well.
All the best

dog had boiling water thrown over him, volunteers are
